LG launching Optimus F5 globally, starting with Europe

LG Optimus F5

France the first European country to have the device; South and Central America to follow

The LG Optimus F5, which is the first of the new F Series devices to be unveiled, is ready for a global debut following its unveiling at MWC in Barcelona. The device, which is targeted at a mid-range price point but still packing some high-end design and LTE, is set to be available in France starting April 29th with a whole host of countries in Central and South America as well as Asia to follow. The F5 runs a Qualcomm 1.2GHz dual-core processor, has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage, a 540x960 (qHD) 4.3-inch display, 5MP/1.3MP cameras and runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. LG is also working hard to bring some of the interesting elements of the Optimus G down to these lower devices, with similar hardware design languages and UX improvements like QSlide and QTranslator.

Pricing and availability will of course vary depending on the market, but LG has high hopes for its new device lineups which cover several different price points and feature offerings. Between the G Series, LII Series and F Series, LG is hoping to cover more ground in every different kind of market. That being said, we still wouldn't expect these to hit the U.S. in their current form.

Maya Posch: Dreams: Relationships And Sexuality

Yesterday while taking a nap due to feeling exhausted and somewhat sick, I had a nightmare, one in which I had somehow met this guy and I found myself in his room which I knew to be inside his mother's house. I never saw her. The guy was kind of lonely so I wanted to help, yet throughout this all he exhibited a weird mean streak. Only afterwards did I realize that he had just been cruel. I eventually managed to sneak away and hide in a pile of firewood ("becoming the wood"). I woke up from this dream with one of my arms crossed over my chest, and both hands more or less clenched into a fist and my heart pounding like crazy.

Today I felt very agitated and depressed. After deciding to go take a nap again I got to my bed where something inside me kind of snapped. I felt so frustrated that I began to hit myself on the head over and over again until it started hurting so much that I could only drag myself into bed where I fell asleep. I then had another nightmare.

The initial part of the dream I do not remember well. I was apparently in the house in which I grew up, and yet it wasn't really. It was more light and spacious. There was something going on with food. Dinner, I think. I didn't feel like eating yet, until at one point I told my mother that she could warm up some of the pasta for me. Shortly after that I decided to go upstairs to my room. Nearing the top of the stair I could see that my room's door wasn't fully open as I had left it, but slightly ajar. Pushing it open I went into my room, which again wasn't really like my room of the past. Again more light and spacious. To my left was my bed, but in it was already someone. A woman. First she looked like Jeri Ryan, who was wriggling about under the blankets, seemingly amused. As I got closer and slid into the bed as well, she changed into a more African looking woman.

The moment I first saw a woman in my bed I didn't really feel anything, it was more a matter of observing a fact. Sliding into the bed next to her I found it to be a comforting thought to be next to her. Nice and cozy. Lying next to her she suddenly proposed getting intimate with me, which caught me by surprise. Working in my head through the logistics of such a thing, I found no problems there. Preparing, I had just changed from fully clothed into wearing the same but my pink pyjama pants instead of my jeans, when my mother came into the room to tell that dinner was ready. At this point I thought it would be a good idea to lock the door, so I got out and wandered over the other side of the room where I knew that the key probably was. I didn't find it, however.

Meanwhile the woman was just wandering about near the bed, talking with my mother or such. Her presence didn't incite anything negative, which I think meant that she was supposed to be there. Maybe she was my girlfriend after all. I decided to ditch the locked door idea and walked back over to her. My mother and the shadowy male figure I had sensed near her had left. As the woman and I came close we embraced. As we stood there, I started trembling. The really bad kind of shaking when you're either nervous or anxious enough to nearly bolt away to safety, or stricken with fear. I held her tightly as I said to her in a trembling voice that I felt so nervous, more than I had ever felt before. The image then suddenly distorted into nonsense.

As I woke up from that nightmare, I found both my arms firmly crossed on my chest and both hands tightly clenched into fists. I was crying.

Thanks to today's nightmare I think I now know what yesterday's nightmare was about, namely my experiences living together with that person. The second nightmare was for me a frightening look into how traumatizing sexuality has always been to me. I have actually experienced such trembling before with a real-life experience, though I chose to ignore it at the time. In the nightmare I chose to finally admit to myself that there's nothing which fills me more with terror than the thought of sexuality. I have just been forcing myself to try and accept it as something normal, while further damaging myself that way. My experiences the past months more so.

This all taken together it seems quite clear where some of my worst traumas are, and the worst roadblocks on the way to recovery. It's in some ways infuriating that a good, healthy relationship could be so beneficial to me, while the possibility of such a thing happening is sheer random chance. I could run into the perfect person tomorrow, or never. Maybe a plan B is in order, with a shrink specializing in sexuality poking and prodding me. Maybe.

Or maybe that's plan C and plan B is to become a bloody hermit.

Chevron resumes operations in unit closed by fire

RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) ? Chevron has resumed operations in a unit at its Bay Area refinery that was shut down after a massive fire last year.

Company officials said during a conference call with analysts Friday that crews had begun feeding crude oil through the unit knocked out by the Aug. 6 fire.

Chevron's chief financial officer, Patricia Yarrington, says the unit at Richmond is expected to be fully operational during the second quarter.

Both Chevron and government investigations have determined that corrosion in a pipe caused a leak that sparked the fire, sending a plume of black smoke over nearby areas.

Since the fire, the refinery had been operating at about 60 percent capacity until very recently. The factory wasn't processing crude oil and instead was being used to blend gasoline.

Looking for answers from Boston to Russia

BOSTON (AP) ? From Boston and Washington to Russia, investigators pressed for answers Wednesday about the Muslim radicalism believed behind the Boston Marathon bombing, while more than 4,000 mourners paid tribute to an MIT police officer who authorities say was gunned down by the bombers.

Among the speakers at the memorial service in Cambridge was Vice President Joe Biden, who condemned the bombing suspects as "two twisted, perverted, cowardly, knockoff jihadis."

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was listed in fair condition as he recovered from wounds suffered during a getaway attempt. He could get the death penalty if convicted of plotting with his older brother, now dead, to set off the pressure-cooker bombs that killed three people and wounded more than 260 on April 15. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died in a shootout with police.

The bombs were detonated by remote control, according to U.S. officials close to the investigation who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly. It was not clear what the detonation device was, but the charges against Dzhokhar say he was using a cellphone moments before the blasts.

U.S. officials also said Dzhokhar has told interrogators he and his brother were angry about the U.S. wars in Muslim Afghanistan and Iraq.

After closed-door briefings on Capitol Hill with the FBI and other law enforcement officials, lawmakers said earlier this week that it appeared so far that the brothers were radicalized via the Internet instead of by direct contact with any terrorist groups, and that the older brother was the driving force in the bomb plot.

In Russia, U.S. investigators traveled to the predominantly Muslim province of Dagestan and were in contact with the brothers' parents, hoping to gain more information.

The parents, Anzor Tsarnaev and Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, plan to fly to the U.S. on Thursday, the father was quoted as telling the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. The family has said it wants to bring Tamerlan's body back to Russia.

Investigators are looking into whether Tamerlan, who spent six months in Russia's turbulent Caucasus region in 2012, was influenced by the religious extremists who have waged an insurgency against Russian forces in the area for years. The brothers have roots in Dagestan and neighboring Chechnya, but had lived in the U.S. for about a decade.

At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, bagpipes wailed as students, faculty and staff members and throngs of law enforcement officials paid their respects to MIT police officer Sean Collier, who was ambushed in his cruiser three days after the bombing.

The line of mourners stretched for a half-mile. They had to make their way through tight security, including metal detectors and bomb-sniffing dogs.

Boston native James Taylor sang "The Water is Wide" and led a sing-along of "Shower the People."

Biden told the Collier family that no child should die before his or her parents, but that, in time, the grief will lose some of its sting.

"The moment will come when the memory of Sean is triggered and you know it's going to be OK," Biden said. "When the first instinct is to get a smile on your lips before a tear to your eye."

The vice president also sounded a defiant note.

"The purpose of terror is to instill fear," he said. "You saw none of it here in Boston. Boston, you sent a powerful message to the world."

In another milestone in Boston's recovery, the area around the marathon finish line was reopened to the public, with fresh cement still drying on the repaired sidewalk. Delivery trucks made their way down Boylston Street under a heavy police presence, though some damaged stores were still closed.

"I don't think there's going to be a sense of normalcy for a while," Tom Champoux, who works nearby, said as he pointed to the boarded-up windows. "There are scars here that will be with us for a long time."

What planets are made of: Findings establish counterintuitive potential planet-forming materials

Apr. 24, 2013 ? A team of researchers led by Artem R. Oganov, a professor of theoretical crystallography in the Department of Geosciences, has made a startling prediction that challenges existing chemical models and current understanding of planetary interiors -- magnesium oxide, a major material in the formation of planets, can exist in several different compositions. The team's findings, "Novel stable compounds in the Mg-O system under high pressure," are published in the online edition of Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics. The existence of these compounds -- which are radically different from traditionally known or expected materials -- could have important implications.

"For decades it was believed that MgO is the only thermodynamically stable magnesium oxide, and it was widely believed to be one of the main materials of the interiors of the Earth and other planets," said Qiang Zhu, the lead author of this paper and a postdoctoral student in the Oganov laboratory.

"We have predicted that two new compounds, MgO2 and Mg3O2, become stable at pressures above one and five million atmospheres, respectively. This not only overturns standard chemical intuition but also implies that planets may be made of totally unexpected materials. We have predicted conditions (pressure, temperature, oxygen fugacity) necessary for stability of these new materials, and some planets, though probably not the Earth, may offer such conditions," added Oganov.

In addition to their general chemical interest, MgO2 and Mg3O2 might be important planet-forming minerals in deep interiors of some planets. Planets with these compounds would most likely be the size of Earth or larger.

The team explained how its paper predicted the structures in detail by analyzing the electronic structure and chemical bonding for these compounds. For example, Mg3O2 is forbidden within "textbook chemistry," where the Mg ions can only have charges "+2," O ions are "-2, and the only allowed compound is MgO. In the "oxygen-deficient" semiconductor Mg3O2, there are strong electronic concentrations in the "empty space" of the structure that play the role of negatively charged ions and stabilize this material. Curiously, magnesium becomes a d-element (i.e. a transition metal) under pressure, and this almost alchemical transformation is responsible for the existence of the "forbidden" compound Mg3O2.

The findings were made using unique methods of structure prediction, developed in the Oganov laboratory. "These methods have led to the discovery of many new phenomena and are used by a number of companies for systematically discovering novel materials on the computer -- a much cheaper route, compared to traditional experimental methods," said Zhu.

"It is known that MgO makes up about 10 percent of the volume of our planet, and on other planets this fraction can be larger. The road is now open for a systematic discovery of new unexpected planet-forming materials," concluded Oganov.

This work is funded by the National Science Foundation and DARPA.

Acer announces Liquid E2 smartphone with quadcore processor, optional dual SIM slots

We haven't heard much from Acer on the smartphone front since it announced a pair of handsets at Mobile World Congress, but the company's now back with another that it hopes will improve its standing in markets outside North America: the Liquid E2. Expectedly, this one is an update to the E1, and includes a bump up from a dual-core to a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, and the addition of an optional dual-SIM card slot (availability of it will depend on the particular market). Otherwise, you'll get a 4.5-inch qHD IPS display, an 8 megapixel camera that promises "zero shutter delay," the same dual-speakers 'round back found on the E1, and stock Jelly Bean for an OS. There's no word yet of this one making its way over here, but you can look for it to hit the UK, France, Germany and a number of other countries in early-to-mid-May for €229, or just under $300.

The basic premise of Web marketing is to market your goods and services online. Newcomers may find it tricky to engage Website marketing, but lots of solid advice is available so you can begin your adventure into Internet promotion with safety and success.

Advertise your company on popular websites online. This can make a big difference for exposure. For the most bang for your buck, choose a page with plenty of traffic so that as many people as possible see your company name.

Are you looking for a way to improve your website marketing campaign? Use certain strategies to ensure your customers are aware that your site is secure. Include a privacy policy in the upper right hand corner of your page. These guarantees are a great way to gain the confidence of consumers that are iffy about shopping online. Furthermore, you have an obligation to protect your customers from fraud.

Do your research online for a comparison of different marketing techniques on the best place to start a blog. Check out online communities for business owners, start following marketing blogs, download free e-books, and check out free seminars.

In order to increase ad revenue, customize your site's banners and make them look less like advertisements. Try to make them appear like clickable links to get more content. Most people will not click banners when they see them, so this will entice them to.

Talk with other online retailers to see if any mutual arrangements can be made. This method is very efficient at linking many different markets, which will increase your sales. This strategy is proven effective by the ways that online booking agents bundle vacation packages. This idea is perfect for any company that has linked products that complement each other, but are not seen as competitors.

To boost your site traffic and optimize your site for search engines on how to start blogging, you absolutely must have unique, original and fresh content. This really helps websites that sell products that other websites offer. Traffic won't be generated because you won't rank high at all if you just copy other content. When you have unique and original product descriptions, your site will stand out in the search engines and lead you to higher rankings.

Ask well known and respected individuals in your niche to write articles or do interviews. Before you publish anything, be certain of getting permission. You don't want to suffer legal problems. After you have permission, write the articles from your interviews and submit to online directories. This can get you sales, credibility and more traffic.

Let your users post reviews. The real customer experiences will encourage new sales, and the new content will help drive traffic to your site.

Provide free gifts to go along with purchases of your services and/or products to help customers feel respected. Making customers feel good is often underrated among strategies for Affiliate marketing, so although including free gifts with orders may seem expensive, in the long run having repeat business and loyal customers will pay off.

One tip that everybody should follow is allowing users the option of buying items at wholesale or retail prices; depending on how much they decide to purchase. You will be able to make a profit with wholesale price selling, but this offers a great way to increase product sales.

A feedback box at the bottom of an ad copy can be implemented, allowing consumers to provide you with information as to why they chose not to purchase from you on that day. Their input is valuable because they will let you know if they weren't happy with your available products, your policies or if there was another problem they experienced.

If you have a knack for writing, try writing about your products and business and then submit your articles to websites and magazines. Include your website information along with all your business information. Urge them to give priority to publishing the articles you provide by giving them incentives and commissions.

Create a unique quality website and you will get more visitors. Post something unexpected, like an animated cartoon, a video presentation or a free offer to generate interest. Giving people items that they cannot find anywhere, but your site is a great way to market.

The tips you've just reviewed should give you an excellent idea of how to prepare your online marketing efforts. Effective Website marketing techniques allow your business to grow at a pace you are comfortable with.

Pup named Huckleberry crowned 'Beautiful Bulldog'

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? If at first you don't succeed, wipe the slobber off and try again.

Just ask 4-year-old pup Huckleberry, who was crowned Monday as this year's "Beautiful Bulldog."

Huckleberry competed for the title in 2010, only to walk away empty-pawed. That changed this year, when he strutted down a blue runway at Drake University in Des Moines dressed in a beige suit as the main character from the movie "Forrest Gump."

"He's just a lover," said his owner, Stephanie Hein, as Huckleberry sat next to his miniature basketball toy and a suitcase similar to one owned by Forrest Gump.

The contest is now in its 34th year and is held ahead of the annual Drake Relays track and field meet. The university's mascot is a bulldog, and each year's winner becomes the mascot for the relays event.

Huckleberry beat 46 other bulldogs to don the crown and cape, and competition was stiff. There was a bulldog dressed as a "Thing" character by Dr. Seuss, another wore an eye patch and fake hoop earring to match his pirate-dressed owner. Diva, donning a tutu, took home the prize for best dressed.

Huckleberry seemed unfazed by all the attention, more interested in a dog-friendly cake that's served annually from the gold-painted throne. He threw in a few slobbered kisses to his owners.

When not competing, Huckleberry likes to cuddle and hang out with a girlfriend bulldog who lives nearby, according to Hein and her husband, Steven.

Huckleberry wore a Mohawk when he initially competed in 2010. But Stephanie Hein spent weeks shrinking and sowing together this year's outfit, which included a blue-checkered T-Shirt similar to the one worn by Forrest Gump.

"He was just a puppy then," she said of his first attempt. "But he's certainly grown into himself now."

Goodrich deal helps United Tech offset weak portfolio

By Ernest Scheyder

(Reuters) - Diversified manufacturer United Technologies Corp reported a better-than-expected profit on Tuesday as its purchase of aircraft components maker Goodrich helped offset U.S. defense cuts and weakness across Europe.

The defense cuts, part of a massive sequestration program designed to reduce the U.S. federal budget, especially hurt its Sikorsky unit, maker of the popular Black Hawk helicopter, where profit fell 34 percent.

"Sequestration is a reality, but it's unfolding slowly at this time," Chief Executive Louis Chenevert said in an interview. "We will understand more what sequestration does as we get to the end of the year."

Sales to the U.S. Department of Defense make up roughly 17 percent of United Tech's revenue.

Earnings would not have grown without the 2012 Goodrich acquisition as well as a deal to take control of engine maker IAE. Chenevert said both deals were performing better than expected and would help the company meet its goal for 2013 earnings of $5.85 to $6.15 per share.

"I'm very encouraged by the company on the aerospace front," he said.

The $16.5 billion deal for Goodrich boosted United Tech's portfolio of wheels, brakes, gyroscopes and other aircraft materials in demand from airlines and aircraft manufacturers.

As a result, its UTC Aerospace Systems unit posted a spike in both first-quarter revenue and profit.

Orders for Otis elevators, the company's most profitable unit, jumped 24 percent, largely due to demand from China. Orders for air conditioners and other climate control products rose 5 percent in the same period.

New orders, not necessarily the same as revenue, are a key indicator of demand and closely monitored by Wall Street.

Demand for commercial heating, vacuum and air conditioning units dropped sharply in Europe. The continent contributes roughly 25 percent of annual sales.

"While Europe had some pluses and minuses, it was no surprise," Chenevert said. "We are seeing it unfold as we expected."

REVS JUMP 16 PERCENT

United Tech posted first-quarter profit of $1.27 billion, or $1.39 per share, compared with $330 million, or $1.31 per share, in the year-earlier period.

The year-before figures included a one-time charge for discontinued operations.

Analysts expected first-quarter earnings of $1.30 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue rose 16 percent to $14.39 billion, missing the $14.94 billion estimate from Wall Street.

United Tech stood by its forecast for 2013 earnings of $5.85 to $6.15 per share and 2013 revenue of $64 billion to $65 billion.

The company said it would cut debt by $2 billion this year, versus a previous goal of $1 billion. Debt fell slightly in the period to $21.57 billion.

5 pairs of countries that Americans confuse

Newsflash: The Czech Republic is not the same as the Russia region of Chechnya

Last Friday, in response to a flurry of social media activity mistakenly identifying the Boston bombing suspects as having a Czech, rather than Chechen, background, the Czech ambassador to the US issued a statement clarifying that "the Czech Republic and Chechnya are two very different entities ? the Czech Republic is a Central European country; Chechnya is a part of the Russian Federation."

Nice try, Ambassador Gandalovic, but there are some place names that just sound so similar to us, we will persist in mixing them up no matter how little they have to do with each other and no matter how many times the mistake makes the news. Here are five other pairs of places that people confuse so often their ambassadors don't even shrug at the mistakes anymore.

SEE MORE: About those scanners...

1. AUSTRALIA AND AUSTRIA
In 2007 President Bush thanked the Australian premier for visiting Austrian troops in Iraq. But that wasn't just an isolated Bush gaffe. The countries are so often confused that at tourist shops all over Austria you can buy T-shirts that say "No kangaroos in Austria." To be fair, their names are only separated by two little letters, and it's not only Americans that have trouble with this one. At the G20 summit in South Korea in 2010, the world leaders were presented with dolls crafted in their likenesses. Australian PM Julia Gillard's doll was decked out in a traditional Austrian costume.

2. SWEDEN AND SWITZERLAND
Jessica Alba caught some heat back in 2009 after she told a reporter to "be neutral? like Sweden." Though she defended herself by pointing out that Sweden was neutral during WWII, it brought the issue of Sweden/Switzerland confusion to the fore. The Swedes and Swiss had been complaining for years about the questions they get asked when they reveal where they're from, and they stepped in to helpfully point out the differences: Sweden = Ikea, ABBA, and meatballs; Switzerland = banks, watches, and chocolate.

3. SLOVAKIA AND SLOVENIA
They both start with "slov" and end with "ia." They both became independent nations in the '90s. They have similar flags. They're easy to confuse. But Slovakia, once part of Czechoslovakia, is up there under Poland, and Slovenia, once part of Yugoslavia, is down there next to Italy. Americans aren't the only ones who get these mixed up. They've been confused by world leaders, Olympic officials, and the U.N. And according to this Slovak tourism site, the "staff of Slovak and Slovenian embassies meet once a month to exchange wrongly-addressed mail!"

4. URUGUAY AND PARAGUAY
Uruguay has Atlantic beaches, Paraguay is landlocked. Uruguay voted to allow same-sex marriage, Paraguay's leading presidential candidate said he would shoot off his own testicles if his son wanted to marry another man. When John Gimlette wrote a book about his travel adventures in Paraguay, At the Tomb of the Inflatable Pig, he probably didn't expect that the publishers' design would put the flag of Uruguay on the spine, but that's how it worked out.

5. OAKLAND AND AUCKLAND
In this case, it's the cities that are confusing. In 1985, a California college student was trying to get back to Oakland from a vacation in Germany, but ended up on a plane to Auckland, New Zealand. He bought his ticket correctly, but he ended up at a boarding gate for a flight to New Zealand. He heard all the announcements as "Oakland" and responded "yes" every time airline personnel asked if he was going to Auckland. He realized the mistake after the plane took off, and got a free flight back after spending the day in Auckland, which he described as, "really nice."

Egypt resumes hot air balloon sightseeing

CAIRO (AP) ? A senior civil aviation official says Egypt has resumed hot air balloon sightseeing flights in the ancient city of Luxor in southern Egypt, weeks after a fiery accident.

Authorities suspended flights after 19 tourists were killed on Feb. 26 when their balloon caught fire and crashed in a sugar cane field.

Mohammed Ibrahim Sherif, head of the civil aviation authority, said a hot air balloon was launched in Luxor Sunday after safety and operation measures and regulations required by his office were implemented. He said five companies have been allowed to resume the flights.

One British tourist survived, along with the pilot of the balloon. Both were injured.

Ballooning experts believe the February accident was the worst in the sport's 200-year history.

Feds delay policy to allow small knives on planes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Federal officials say they're delaying a policy that would allow passengers to carry small knives, bats and other sports equipment onto airliners.

The Transportation Security Administration said Monday that the policy change has been delayed to accommodate feedback from an advisory committee made up of aviation industry, consumer and law enforcement officials.

John Pistole (PIH'-stohl), head of the Transportation Security Administration, proposed the policy change last month, saying it would free up the agency to concentrate on protecting against greater threats. TSA screeners confiscate about 2,000 small folding knives from passengers every day.

The policy was to go into effect Thursday. The TSA's statement said the delay was temporary, but no new date for implementation was provided.

The policy has been fiercely opposed by flight attendants' unions.

Nets Crush Bulls In Game 1, 106-89: Deron Williams, Brook Lopez Lead Brooklyn To Blowout Win

NEW YORK -- The Brooklyn blackout was a blowout.

Ripping apart the vaunted Chicago Bulls defense during an impressive second quarter, the Nets punctuated their return to the postseason with a 106-89 victory on Saturday night.

Deron Williams scored 22 points, Brook Lopez had 21 and the Nets made 16 of 20 shots in the second period on their way to 60 percent in the first half.

"That's a hell of a performance," Nets interim coach P.J. Carlesimo said.

Joe Johnson finished with 16 for the Nets, who made their successful first season in Brooklyn even better with a victory in their first playoff appearance since 2007. They will host Game 2 on Monday night.

The Nets wore their road black uniforms and fans were encouraged to wear black as well to make it a "blackout" for the first major postseason game in Brooklyn since Oct. 10, 1956, when the Yankees beat the Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series at Ebbets Field.

The Nets then came out white-hot, shooting nearly 56 percent and putting six players in double figures.

"Everybody was excited for this game," Williams said. "I think it has been a long time coming for this franchise, this organization with the move and everything. We expected to be here, so we came out playing like we wanted to be here ... we were locked in today."

Carlos Boozer had 25 points and eight rebounds for the Bulls, who had Joakim Noah in the starting lineup despite foot pain. But he was clearly limited, and there was no reason to play him more than the 14 minutes he got with the game never in doubt after halftime.

"It was the end of the first (quarter) and they hit us with a haymaker, got us back on our heels," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "So end of the first, second quarter, poor defense, poor intensity, poor energy on offense. You can't win like that."

The sellout crowd of 17,732 was roaring long before Nets reserve Jerry Stackhouse, who wears the No. 42 that Jackie Robinson once sported in Brooklyn, sang the national anthem.

Owner Mikhail Prokhorov, who committed hundreds of millions on player contracts last summer expecting a longtime loser in New Jersey to win big in Brooklyn, came on the court to thank fans for their passion and support, telling them that this playoff appearance was only the beginning.

And what a beginning it was.

Williams even had a reverse dunk in the third quarter, showing how much better he feels after ankle pain had him playing well below his usual level before the All-Star break, when he could barely jump.

Gerald Wallace and C.J. Watson each scored 14 for the Nets, while Andray Blatche had 12.

Noah has battled plantar fasciitis in his right foot and Thibodeau said he didn't want his All-Star center playing if he was injured. But Noah, who grew up in New York, wanted to give it a try. He finished with four points.

"The thing is he hasn't practiced so he's going to be rusty, but I'd rather have him out there. Whatever he can give us is a plus," Thibodeau said. "We didn't play well. It wasn't Jo, it was our team. So he's a big plus for our team, so we'd like to have him out there. We've got to play better. Everyone has to play better."

The Bulls are still without Derrick Rose, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in last year's playoff opener. Thibodeau hasn't ruled out the former MVP returning in this series, noting the end would be two weeks from Saturday if it went the distance.

That looked unlikely after Game 1.

Chicago won three of four during the regular season, holding the Nets to 87.5 points per game, but Brooklyn had 89 after the third quarter of this one.

"It was disappointing," Noah said. "We didn't play well. We didn't come out with the right mindset. They scored way too many points in the paint. We didn't execute well offensively. But you know what, we've got to bounce back. No time to feel sorry for ourselves. We've showed resiliency all year and I think we've got a lot of basketball left."

Fans chanted "Brooklyn! Brooklyn!" before the tip and chanted Wallace's name during it, recognizing his strong performance after a difficult regular season.

The Nets jumped out to an 11-point lead after one quarter, getting 12 points from Lopez. It was 38-26 midway through the second before the Nets blew it open. Lopez made two straight baskets, the latter a dunk after Williams juked Marco Belinelli so badly that Jay-Z practically jumped out of his nearby courtside seat.

Former Bulls backup Watson followed with a 3-pointer to make it a 20-point game for the first time, and it was 60-35 at halftime after the Nets scored the final six points.

"I thought we competed extremely well, I thought we defended extremely well and pushed the ball and shared the ball extremely well in the first half," Carlesimo said.

Noah started the second half, clearly not running well, but was back on the bench before long.

Nate Robinson scored 17 points for Chicago, while Jimmy Butler and Belinelli each had 13. Luol Deng had just six on 3-of-11 shooting.

NOTES: Carlesimo got his first playoff victory since April 30, 1997, when he coached Portland. ... The Bulls reached the conference semifinals the previous three times they were a No. 5 seed. ... Jay-Z was in his usual seat near the Nets' bench even though the rap mogul is selling his small portion of the team, as required, to focus on his player agency business.

Strong quake jolts China's Sichuan, killing 113

BEIJING (AP) ? A powerful earthquake struck the steep hills of China's southwestern Sichuan province on Saturday, leaving at least 113 people dead and more than 2,600 injured, nearly five years after a devastating quake wreaked widespread damage across the region.

Saturday's quake, while not as destructive as that in 2008, toppled buildings, triggered landslides and disrupted phone and power connections in mountainous Lushan county. The village of Longmen was hit particularly hard, with authorities saying nearly all the buildings had been destroyed and state television showing footage of soldiers digging through rubble.

Rescuers turned the square outside the Lushan County Hospital into a triage center, where medical personnel bandaged bleeding victims, according to footage on China Central Television. Rescuers dynamited boulders that had fallen across roads to reach Longmen and other damaged areas lying farther up the mountain valleys, state media reported.

The official Xinhua News Agency, citing the Sichuan earthquake bureau, said at least 113 people had died. The government of Ya'an city, which administers Lushan, said in a statement that more than 2,600 people were injured, 330 of them severely.

The quake ? measured by China's seismological bureau at magnitude 7.0 and the U.S. Geological Survey at 6.6 ? struck the steep hills of Lushan county shortly after 8 a.m., when many people were at home, sleeping or having breakfast. People in their underwear and wrapped in blankets ran into the streets of Ya'an and even the provincial capital of Chengdu, 115 kilometers (70 miles) east of Lushan, according to photos, video and accounts posted online.

The quake's shallow depth, less than 13 kilometers (8 miles), likely magnified the impact, and CCTV showed footage from local security cameras that were shaking. Chengdu's airport shut down for about an hour before reopening, though many flights were canceled or delayed, state media said.

Lushan, where the quake struck, lies where the fertile Sichuan plain meets foothills that eventually rise to the Tibetan plateau and sits atop the Longmenshan fault. It was along that fault line that the devastating magnitude-7.9 quake struck on May 12, 2008, leaving more than 90,000 people dead or missing and presumed dead in one of the worst natural disasters to strike China in recent decades.

"It was just like May 12," Liu Xi, a writer in Ya'an city, who was jolted awake by Saturday's quake, said in a message posted to his account on Sina Corporation's Twitter-like Weibo service. "All the home decorations fell at once, and the old house cracked."

Xinhua said the well-known Bifengxia panda preserve, which is near Lushan, was not affected by the quake. Dozens of pandas were moved to Bifengxia from another preserve, Wolong, after its habitat was wrecked by the 2008 quake.

As in most natural disasters, the government mobilized thousands of soldiers and others ? 7,000 people by Saturday afternoon ? sending excavators and other heavy machinery as well as tents, blankets and other emergency supplies. One soldier died after the vehicle that he and a dozen others were in slipped off the road and rolled down an embankment, state media reported.

Premier Li Keqiang flew to Ya'an to direct rescue efforts, and he and President Xi Jinping ordered officials and rescuers to make saving people the top priority, Xinhua said.

With roads blocked for several hours after the quake, the military surveyed the disaster area by air. Aerial photos released by the military and shown on state television showed individual houses in ruins in Lushan and outlying villages flattened into rubble. The roofs of some taller buildings appeared to have slipped off, exposing the floors beneath them.

A person whose posts to the micro-blogging account "Qingyi Riverside" on Weibo carried a locator geotag for Lushan said many buildings collapsed and that people could spot helicopters hovering above.

China Earth Administration said there had been at least 35 aftershocks, including at least two of magnitude 5.0 or higher.

"It's too dangerous," said a person with the Weibo account Chengduxinglin and with a Lushan geotag. "Even the aftershocks are scary."

While rescuers and state media rushed to the disaster scene, China's active social media users filled the information gap. They posted photos of people rushing to streets for safety and of buildings flattened by the quake. They shared information on the availability of phone services, apparently through data services.

BEIJING (AP) ? A powerful earthquake jolted China's Sichuan province Saturday near where a devastating quake struck five years ago, killing at least 70 people and leaving more than 2,000 hurt, prompting worries the death toll will climb.

The quake ? measured by China's seismological bureau at magnitude-7 and the U.S. Geological Survey at 6.6 ? struck the steep hills of Lushan county shortly after 8 a.m. toppling buildings, many of them older brick structures. Tiles fell from roofs and walls collapsed, sending people into the streets in their underwear and wrapped in blankets.

Rescue workers turned a square outside the Lushan's county hospital into a triage center with medical personnel treating the wounded, according to footage on China Central Television.

The emergency response office for the city of Ya'an, which administers Lushan, said the death toll had climbed to 70, including 56 from Lushan, as of 2 p.m., with more than 2,000 injured.

It said in a written statement that nearly all of the structures in Longmen village collapsed and that nearly 10,000 houses were damaged throughout the county.

Hard-hit parts of the county remained unreachable by road, with several highways cut off, the statement said.

The county's power grid has been disrupted and phone services were only partially available, the authorities said. State media said some text and Internet services were working.

A person whose posts to a micro-blogging account "Qingyi Riverside" on Sina Corp.'s Twitter-like Weibo service carried a Lushan geotag said that many buildings collapsed and that people could spot helicopters hovering above.

Aerial photos released by China's military and shown on state television showed individual houses in ruins and some stretches of the county seat and villages flattened into rubble. The roofs of some taller buildings appeared to have slipped off exposing the floors beneath them.

The quake's shallow depth, less than 13 kilometers (8 miles), likely magnified the impact and CCTV showed footage from local security cameras shaking. Xinhua said that the quake rattled buildings in the provincial capital of Chengdu 115 kilometers (70 miles), to the east. It caused the shutdown of the city's airport for about an hour before reopening, state media said.

Lushan, where the quake struck, is home to 124,000 people where the fertile Sichuan plain meets foothills that eventually rise to the Tibetan plateau. The area is near a well-known preserve for pandas, Bifengxia, which Xinhua said was not affected by the quake. Dozens of pandas were moved to Bifengxia from another preserve, Wolong, after its habitat was wrecked by the 2008 quake.

Ya'an authorities said more than 2,000 rescuers were dispatched to the disaster area, along with excavators, loaders, 200 tents and 1,400 quilts.

Premier Li Keqiang flew to Ya'an to direct rescue efforts, and he and President Xi Jinping ordered officials and rescuers to make saving people the top priority, Xinhua said.

Social media users who said they were in Lushan county posted photos of collapsed buildings and reported that water and electricity had been cut off. At least 35 aftershocks ? at least two of them at magnitude-5 or higher ? shook the area.

"It's too dangerous," said a person with the Weibo account Chengduxinglin and with a Lushan geotag. "Even the aftershocks are scary."

The area lies near the same Longmenshan fault where the devastating 7.9-magnitude quake struck May 12, 2008, leaving more than 90,000 people dead or missing and presumed dead.

Deputies didn't shoot at end of Dorner standoff

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Sheriff's transcripts released Friday indicate deputies didn't fire a single shot during the final two hours of a standoff with Christopher Dorner, a former Los Angeles police officer who authorities said killed four people in a nearly weeklong rampage.

The standoff came after a furious gunbattle that erupted shortly after Dorner arrived at a cabin in the San Bernardino Mountains on Feb. 12.

One deputy was killed and another was seriously wounded in the exchange.

Flames eventually broke out, and six minutes later, a single gunshot was heard from inside the cabin. Authorities believe it was Dorner taking his own life.

The transcripts provide the most detailed glimpse yet of the final hours of the manhunt that covered several states and grabbed the attention of the nation.

The radio dispatch transcripts from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department cover the roughly nine hours after a 911 call from Jim and Karen Reynolds, who were tied up by Dorner in their Big Bear condo. The audio was not provided.

The transcripts show law enforcement officers poured in and deputies were told not to fire unless they saw Dorner. They tried using tear gas to force him out of the dwelling, and when that failed, seven canisters of incendiary tear gas were used.

The 30-page transcript describes a chaotic scene where information was being relayed from multiple sources ? a 911 call, carjacking victim, concerned neighbors, and the owner of the mountain cabin ? to law enforcement officers on the ground.

Deputies were provided details by the cabin's owner about the floor plan and told there was no other way out of the basement, where authorities later found Dorner's body.

A school camp director called in to say 550 students were on lockdown and had provisions for the night if necessary.

Law enforcement officers described blood spatter on the cabin walls and mattresses up against them as a barricade.

Multiple agencies offered resources, including high-powered weapons, ammunition and armored vehicles. Fifteen members of the Los Angeles Police Department SWAT team dressed in black landed in the nearby hills only to be turned back to the airport, the transcript says.

Near the end of the standoff, as SWAT officers in an armored BearCat methodically tore down the walls of the cabin, they saw "green smoke" coming from the inside. Authorities believe Dorner was throwing smoke grenades to obscure any view of him.

Eleven minutes later "seven burners deployed, fired (sic) started" ? a reference to incendiary tear gas being lobbed into the cabin to end the standoff. Within minutes walls of the cabin were fully engulfed in flames.

At 4:22 p.m., dispatchers relayed the message, "one single gunshot heard from inside of residence."

Authorities say Dorner killed four people during a nearly weeklong rampage to avenge what he called an unfair firing from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Security analyst: Bombing suspect is ?ongoing threat?

>> your impressions now that we're starting to get more of a picture of these two suspects.

>> first of all, as i think we've all been trying to stress, so much of this information is preliminary. what we're starting to see is a pretty well planned meticulous ongoing threat and shutting down of these whole localities unprecedented since 9/11. the connections to chechnya will be concerned to a lot of people. the level of violence between separatist and russia is well known for the past several years. these are exactly the things that the fbi and people will dig through to try to build a really full profile of one dead perpetrator and the other suspect.

>> it appears according to pete williams reporting that these are two men who had some kind of overseas military training and we've been remarking upon how they appear in this video to the extent you can tell anything by surveillance video but to put it lightly they were two cool customers.

>> well, they are. and i think it's fair to say the cooler they are, the more careful the fbi and boston police are going to go about this. that's why you see massive swaths of boston community getting shut down. having lived there for four years, the thought of these communities with no public transit and the universities, this gives you a window into how seriously officials are taking this. they are absolutely assuming there are more improvised explosive devices out there and they have to be incredibly careful now.

PFT: Revis' return? Bucs-Jets set for Week 1

pg2_g_polian_300Getty Images

In the 1998 NFL draft, Colts General Manager Bill Polian had a decision to make: Peyton Manning or Ryan Leaf? He chose right, and as a result his job in Indianapolis was safe as long Manning was there.

Now Polian is playing a different role, analyzing the draft for ESPN, and he was asked to pick the best quarterback in this year?s draft. Polian?s surprising answer? Oklahoma?s Landry Jones.

Polian said he attended the 2011 Oklahoma-Texas A&M game and watched Jones complete 18/38 passes for 255 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions, and Polian thought Jones compared favorably to Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who was last year?s No. 8 overall pick and is now the Dolphins? starter.

?He was a good one, and when he had a good supporting cast around him, he was great,? Polian said of Jones. ?I was at the game in Norman where he beat Tannehill head-to-head, in a very, very fierce wind. So this guy has been a winner, he?s got stature, he?s got arm strength ? he can make all the throws. He sees the field quite well, and he?s a natural leader.?

Polian acknowledged that there are concerns about Jones, including his lack of mobility, and he said he doesn?t see a Peyton Manning in this year?s draft. But he thinks if there?s a quarterback who?s going to make an instant impact for an NFL team in 2013, it?s Jones.

?I don?t think anybody in this group is going to be able to step in right away and lead the team, but if you ask me, who?s the guy who?s most ready, and who?s the guy who?s had the most winning experience, it would be Landry Jones,? Polian said.

From all indications, Polian?s view is a minority opinion ? most people think Geno Smith of West Virginia, E.J. Manuel of Florida State, Matt Barkley of USC and Ryan Nassib of Syracuse are all better prospects than Jones.

Best of the web launches prolisting ahead of 19th birthday celebration

Best of the WebBest of the Web, a directory of all the content on the web, turns 19 on April 20.

SEW spoke with BOTW president and founder Greg Harnett about his company?s upcoming birthday, how the industry has evolved since its founding, and where BOTW is going.

SEW: Can you just sum up briefly what Best of the Web is, for those who might be unfamiliar with it?

Greg Hartnett: At Best of the Web, our goal is to review and categorize all of the information on the Internet. It's a pretty lofty project. Every day, our team of editors scours the web and places quality content into the most relevant category at BOTW. Users of BOTW can be assured that the sites they find are great resources, with no spam or irrelevant sites.

Each listing is reviewed by a human being to assure that the sites adhere to our quality guidelines. That commitment lends a certain authority to BOTW. This is an opportunity for site owners and online marketers to let users ? both human and spiders ? know that their site has met our editorial review standards and can be trusted to provide quality content.

SEW: How has the company evolved since it launched 19 years ago?

GH: We continue to introduce new offerings as the content on the web evolves. When blogs hit the scene, we launched the BOTW Blog Directory?to help bloggers connect with an audience. As search became more localized, we built and launched BOTW Local?to help users find information on millions of businesses throughout the U.S.

We built BOTW UK?to bring our web directory services to users and site owners in the UK. And as social exploded, we introduced social networking profiles to the web directory listings to give site owners a broader reach to their online presence.

SEW: Where do you see the industry moving next?

GH: Authorship and authority continue to gain traction as quality indicators, and social signals are playing a growing role in search. Mobile and tablet use also continue to accelerate, while apps are pulling people away from the Internet completely.

None of these trends are going away, and BOTW plans on serving these new kinds of users. We continue to keep our eyes on these trends and decide how we can provide services accordingly.

SEW: Are there any new products in the works?

GH: We are undertaking an overhaul of our Local product. We need to step up our offering to stay competitive in the Local space, so we are redoing a lot of the categorization and making big improvements to the search functionality.

We have a few more changes in the works but they're not far enough along the development cycle to discuss at length. We will also launch a new product, as is our tradition, to celebrate the company?s birthday.

SEW: Tell me more.

GH: Each year on our birthday, we have a huge sale, and announce a new service timed around the birthday celebration. This year, we are offering 50 percent off all BOTW offerings. The sale is only good on Monday, April 22; our birthday falls on a Saturday this year, so we made the sale on the Monday instead.

As for the new product, we are also pleased to announce the introduction of the BOTW ProListing, which will enable site owners to add three pieces of featured content to their web directory listings.

Content marketing has grown in importance in today's search environment and even the best marketers know that just because you publish it doesn't mean people are going to engage with it. BOTW ProListing aims to help you get your content seen, crawled, and shared.

You can change content as often as you like, at one fixed cost per month. So each time you create a new piece of killer content, you can go in and add it to your web directory listing, to get noticed as quickly as possible.

By the way, users who sign up on Monday April 22nd will only pay $9.85 per month for the service, compared to a regular monthly price of $19.70.

SEW: What gave rise to ProListing?

GH: It was an idea we started using internally for sites added by our editors. After getting a ton of user requests for them, we decided to launch ProListing for everyone. Feedback from users thus far is great and we are very excited about the new launch.

SEW: Can you share some of the hardest lessons you have learned in this business?

GH: One thing I?ve learned is that shortcuts don't work in the long run. Building something that can stand the test of time takes time itself. There are no shortcuts that work, period.

Secondly, I have learned to stick to what I am good at. We have failed spectacularly in areas that are outside of our core competencies.

SEW: Can you give me an example?

GH: We launched the BOTW Media Network about seven years ago, a network of blogs publishing content on approximately 60 topics. It was a huge bust, and I personally had to fire almost 100 people in one day.

We tried doing a few different lead generation sites in some fairly competitive areas, a total fail that lost us hundreds of thousands of dollars. I'm pretty sure that we'll try and fail again. That's what business is about.

The lesson? Just because you see other people succeeding at something doesn't mean you are necessarily a good fit for that product. Stick to what you are good at, and make sure you surround yourself with passionate, intelligent people.

SEW: Thanks so much for your time, Greg.

GH: It was a pleasure!

EDF says "in no hurry" for UK nuclear projects

PARIS (Reuters) - EDF chief executive officer Henri Proglio said on Thursday talks are continuing between the French utility and the British government about its nuclear projects in Britain but added that he was "in no hurry" to sign an agreement.

EDF and the British government are in negotiation about the price at which the UK would buy electricity from nuclear plants to be built by EDF.

"I am not in a hurry. We obtained an extension of the life span of existing plants ... As far as I am concerned, negotiations can also fail," Proglio told reporters on the sidelines of a debate about France's energy policy.

Last month, EDF won planning approval to build Britain's first new nuclear power station in almost 20 years but warned the project would only move forward if both parties could agree a guaranteed minimum "strike" price for the power produced.

EDF wants at least 100 pounds per megawatt-hour (MWh) while the government would prefer a price around 80 pounds, according to industry sources and analysts.

Chancellor George Osborne told a panel of MPs last month that both sides aimed to reach a deal.

EDF wants to build two reactors at an estimated cost of 14 billion pounds, but wants assurances that it can recoup its investment with a government guarantee to support energy prices.

Stretched by high debt and the need to upgrade its ageing nuclear fleet in France, the French utility can ill afford a miscalculation in a major foreign investment.

In February British utility Centrica pulled out of its partnership with EDF to build new nuclear power stations in Britain.

The withdrawal will force EDF to find a new partner, possibly Chinese, but Proglio has repeatedly said that without a favourable strike price no other companies would be interested in the project.

While Germany and others have turned away from nuclear energy in the wake of Japan's Fukushima disaster in 2011, Britain remains intent on building new atomic capacity and plans to build up to 16 gigawatts of new nuclear power capacity.
