Israel shows no signs of yielding to Palestinians

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) ? Israel's prime minister is showing no signs of bending as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry presses forward with efforts to restart Mideast peace talks.

Benjamin Netanyahu told his Cabinet on Sunday that he is ready to begin talks with the Palestinians immediately, but he made no mention of yielding to Palestinian demands to halt settlement construction or release Palestinian prisoners.

Netanyahu says he will not compromise on Israel's security and if a deal is reached, he says he will seek approval in a national referendum. A referendum is not required, and critics have said it would add an additional obstacle to implanting a deal that relinquishes territory to the Palestinians.

Arkansas Football Countdown Day 63: R.J. Morris

R.J. Morris is a player easy to root for because he's like us, living out a childhood dream.

Only nine weeks from today the crew from College Gameday will be prepping us for the first Saturday of college football, but in the interim, get to know redshirt freshman R.J. Morris.

Morris is an offensive lineman who hails from Naperville, IL, and is one of those players who makes himself easy to root for. Like most of us, he grew up a Razorback fan but instead of remaining a just a fan, he headed to join the team as a preferred walk-on.

He stands at 6-foot-4, 312-pound and played guard and tackle in high school, and mind you, Bret Bielema loves these kids too because he was once a walk-on out of high school as well.

Now while most of us never had the opportunity to accept a preferred walk-on offer, I have respect for anyone in his shoes--at any level-- who pays his own way through school while experiencing the pressures of such a demanding extracurricular activity.

If you can handle the Mississippi State-esque cowbells midway through this video for a few minutes, here are some high school highlights:

'Lola' tops 204 mph, breaking electric vehicle land speed record

Drayson Racing team members celebrate their land speed record.

Drayson Racing/The Detroit Bureau

Drayson Racing team members celebrate their land speed record.

With all the emphasis on electric propulsion these days, it might seem hard to believe that it?s been 39 years since General Electric ? yes, GE ? set the FIA World Electric Land Speed Record. But that achievement has finally been bested by a sleek, Le Mans Prototype dubbed ?Lola.?

On an RAF airbase in Yorkshire, England, an 850-horsepower battery-electric built by Drayson Racing hit a top speed of 204.185 miles per hour during a pair of runs down a 3-kilometer (nearly 2-mile) track. That was a full 29 mph faster than the 175 mph record set way back in 1974 by the Battery Box General Electric.

?I?m delighted we?ve beaten the record tonight and can show the world EVs can be fast and reliable,? said Lord Paul Drayson, whose firm built the 2,200 battery, and who personally piloted it during the record run. ?It is not the outright speed of 204.185 mph that is most impressive about this record, but the engineering challenge of accelerating a 1000 kilogram electric vehicle on a short runway over a measured mile.?

Officially known as the Drayson B12 69/EV the enclosed racer used ultra-light carbon fiber for its chassis and body to compensate for the heft of a 30 kilowatt-hour battery pack. It also relied on custom-designed Michelin LM P1 tires.

Though most folks likely associate electric propulsion with ? but slow ? vehicles like the Nissan Leaf or Chevrolet Volt, the reality is that battery power can also deliver some impressive performance as an electric motor yields maximum torque the moment it starts spinning.

Drayson?s Lola can launch from 0 to 60 in less than 4 seconds, for example, and keep gaining speed until it?s pushed well past 200 mph. In fact, Lord Drayson is apparently looking to soon beat his own record, tweeting to fans that on an additional run the car was ?very lively at 216 mph.?

While he may be celebrating victory, the claimed record could come under dispute. The Buckeye Bullet, an EV built by students at Ohio State University, actually achieved a 307.7 mph average during two runs at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah in August 2010 ? and was seen as capable of reaching 400 mph. But that effort was not officially sanctioned by the FIA, leaving GE?s Battery Box the certified record-holder for another three years.

To proponents, what matters most is the increasing focus in electric racing and battery propulsion, in general.

There?s clearly a lot more interest, for example, has nudged its ZEOD RC battery race car up to 186 mph, and Top EV Racing claims to have launched its battery dragster from 0 to 100 in a mind-boggling 0.8 seconds.

What could put battery racing square in the public eye is the new Formula E series set to launch in 2015. Not surprisingly, Lord Drayson is looking to participate when that program gets underway.

Netflix Max: A New Recommendation Engine That Talks Back

Well, this is out of left field. Today Netflix is rolling out a new recommendation system for PlayStation 3 owners called Max. He'll help "you find something great to watch in a fun, conversational way."

So, PlayStation 3 owners will receive suggestions from Max in one of three (maybe four) ways. The first of which involves a short interrogation about what mood you're in and your tastes, and then using the existing predictive algorithms to come to a suggestion. The next is what Netflix is calling the "ratings game," wherein you pick a genre and then rate a handful of movies. (Don't they already do this one?) Another little game Max likes to play forces you to pick between two very different genres and the last promises to be a surprise, literally.

If all goes well and Max actually works, Netflix says they'll expand the service to more users in the coming weeks and expand to the iPad next. We'll see how this goes. Let us know! [Netflix]

Levitating magician: How magicians use science to deceive

Levitating magician: A viral Pepsi ad shows an English magician apparently levitating alongside a double-decker bus. How are we so easily fooled by magic?

By Eoin O'Carroll,?Staff / June 27, 2013

A TV commercial posted online shows an English magician named Dynamo apparently levitating off the side of one of London's iconic double-decker buses, as amazed onlookers gape, point, and, because this is 2013, shoot photos and video with their phones. He then slides off the bus, produces a can of Pepsi Max, opens it, and takes a sip.

It was posted on Monday, and by Thursday afternoon, it already had more than 2.3 million views. Have a look at the video at the top of this page, if you haven't done so already.

"If you can just take a moment to look at things from a new perspective," says Dynamo in his gentle Yorkshire accent, "you might see the world in a whole new light."?

So how did Dynamo do it? Here, we reveal his secret: He had the soda can in his pocket the whole time.?

OK, we're not going to say how Dynamo floated alongside the bus: Exposing the secrets of individual magicians serves only to diminish the entertainment. (It can also ruin their livelihoods, and why would we want to do that?)?

So instead, we'll just give away how every magician everywhere performs every illusion. And we'll share some cognitive psychology with you along the way.

At the heart of every illusion is misdirection, the manipulation of the audience's attention. ?

"Everyone knows what attention is," wrote William James in his seminal 1890 work, "Principles of Psychology."

"It is the taking possession by the mind, in clear and vivid form, of one out of what seem several simultaneously possible objects or trains of thought. Focalization, concentration, of consciousness are of its essence. It implies withdrawal from some things in order to deal effectively with others, and is a condition which has a real opposite in the confused, dazed, scatterbrained state which in French is called distraction, and Zerstreutheit in German."

And skilled magicians are the ultimate?Zerstreutheitmeisters. Gesturing hands, shiny props, dazzling spotlights, flying doves, "assistants" in sparkly outfits, and, in Dynamo's case, waggling feet and a smartphone are all expertly deployed to take your mind off of where the "magic" ? usually a fairly straightforward mechanism ? is really happening. And we fall for it almost every time.

We get fooled for two big reasons: The first is that we aren't able to take in all of the stimuli in our environment all at once. You might think that you're eyes are merely windows to the outside world, but the picture that you're seeing right now is mostly a simulation. As you focus your attention on these words, the rest your visual field is sketched out in only the barest detail. It only appears like a rich vista because your brain is constantly filling in the gaps, not with what it actually perceives, but with what it expects to perceive. ?

Want proof? Place your left hand over your left eye. Extend your right arm forward, with your index finger raised. Now, staring at a point straight ahead, and not at your finger, slowly move your arm to the right. When your arm is at an angle of about 15 degrees, the tip of your finger will vanish. Presto!

Spinning Obama?s Climate Change Plan

President Barack Obama?s climate change plan had both sides busy spinning data:

  • Rep. Eric Cantor, in warning that the president?s plan would hurt the economy, said Americans are increasingly ?losing faith in their economy.? But the Consumer Confidence Index, released a day before Cantor spoke, showed consumer confidence ?is now at its highest level since January 2008.?
  • Obama said that ?since 2006, no country on Earth has reduced its total carbon pollution by as much as the United States of America.? That?s accurate in terms of the amount of emissions reduced. But dozens of nations have reduced their carbon dioxide emissions by a larger percentage than the U.S., which is second only to China in total emissions.

The president gave a major speech on climate change on June 25, outlining a broad plan to use his executive powers to reduce greenhouse gases. A day later, House Republican leaders ? including Cantor, the House majority leader ? held a press conference to denounce the potential economic impact of the plan.

Cantor, June 26: Increasingly, the American people are losing trust in their government and losing faith in their economy, and these are the problems that House Republicans are trying to address and trying to fix. But ? yesterday, the president took time out to announce that he will unilaterally introduce new rules and regulations that will impose higher energy costs on our small businesses and our working families, depressing growth in our economy.

Cantor ignores the most recent results from the Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index.

The Conference Board, an independent economic research organization founded in 1916, produces monthly reports that are closely watched by businesses and economists and widely reported by business media. The board released its June report a day before the GOP press conference. The results were positive, with the index increasing to 81.4 from 74.3 in May:

Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators at the Conference Board, June 25: Consumer Confidence increased for the third consecutive month and is now at its highest level since January 2008 (Index 87.3). Consumers are considerably more positive about current business and labor market conditions than they were at the beginning of the year. Expectations have also improved considerably over the past several months, suggesting that the pace of growth is unlikely to slow in the short-term, and may even moderately pick up.

Days before the release of the most recent CCI, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke cited ?increases in consumer confidence? as a reason that the Fed may start to slow its bond buying program ? an announcement?that immediately drove down the markets. Canadian Business magazine reported that Bernanke ?returned to that theme? ? of consumer confidence ? ?several times? in his June 19 press conference.

Canadian Business, June 19: The chairman returned to that theme several times again during Wednesday?s press conference. He cited the latest reading on the University of Michigan Survey of Consumer Sentiment, which showed that Americans haven?t felt so good since July 2007.

We contacted Cantor?s office for data supporting his statement. His spokeswoman, Megan Whittemoore, directed us to the June 18 Gallup Economic Confidence Index (a weekly poll) and the June 26 Rasmussen Consumer Index (a daily survey). The Rasmussen Consumer Index, as of June 26, was 100.4 ? a drop of 11 points from a six-year high of 111.3 recorded on June 19. Gallup?s June 18 report showed a dip of two points, from -7 to -9, from the previous week. The most recent Gallup report, which was published June 25, showed economic confidence edged up 1 point from the report Whittemoore cited.

Both the June 25 Gallup report and the June 26 Rasmussen Consumer Index report noted that consumer confidence remains relatively high. Rasmussen said it remained ?unchanged from three months ago,? despite the recent dip. Gallup reported, ?Confidence remains on the higher end of what Gallup has measured the last five years,? as is partly illustrated in the chart below that was included in Gallup?s recent report.

Gallup Economic Confidence ratings, 2011-2013

gallup economic confidence

Despite improvements, the surveys do show that most Americans are not optimistic about the economy. Negative Gallup scores ?indicate Americans are more negative than positive? about the economy. That?s true, too, of the Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which showed more consumers believe business conditions are ?bad? than ?good.?

Conference Board, June 25: Consumers? assessment of current conditions continued to improve in June. Those stating business conditions are ?good? held steady at 19.1 percent, while those saying business conditions are ?bad? decreased to 24.9 percent from 26.0 percent. Consumers? appraisal of the job market was also more positive. Those claiming jobs are ?plentiful? increased to 11.7 percent from 9.9 percent, while those claiming jobs are ?hard to get? edged up to 36.9 percent from 36.4 percent.

In short, data from multiple sources suggest consumers feel the economy is not good, but getting better ? contrary to Cantor?s claim that ?increasingly? Americans are ?losing faith in their economy.?

U.S. Leader in CO2 Reductions?

In the speech that triggered Cantor?s remarks, Obama did some spinning of his own.

The president?s remark that ?no country on Earth has reduced its total carbon pollution by as much as the United States of America? since 2006 is supported by a May 2012 news release from the International Energy Agency on global carbon dioxide emissions in 2011. While global emissions edged up, U.S. emissions went down.

IEA, May 24, 2012: CO2 emissions in the United States in 2011 fell by 92 Mt, or 1.7%, primarily due to ongoing switching from coal to natural gas in power generation and an exceptionally mild winter, which reduced the demand for space heating. US emissions have now fallen by 430 Mt (7.7%) since 2006, the largest reduction of all countries or regions.

However, it should be noted that there are few countries that even come close to emitting the amount of carbon dioxide that the U.S. does. The results are different when the reduction amount is calculated as a percentage.

In 2011, the U.S. emitted 5,490.63 million metric tons of carbon dioxide. That was second only to China, which emitted 8,715.31 million metric tons. In fact, the U.S. carbon dioxide emissions reduction of over 430 million metric tons since 2006 is more than most countries emit in a single year. Only 14 countries, including the U.S. and China, emitted more than that amount of carbon dioxide in 2011.

The U.S. wouldn?t be tops if emissions reductions were measured by the percentage change.

The U.S. reduced its CO2 emissions by 7.32 percent from 2006 to 2011, according to the most recent data from the Energy Information Administration. The EIA cited ?slower economic growth, weather,? higher gasoline prices and an increasing shift from coal to natural gas as reasons for the emissions decline in 2011.

But more than 40 nations had a larger percentage reduction than the U.S., including France (10.10 percent), Germany (12.01 percent), Italy (14.24 percent), Spain (14.41 percent) and the United Kingdom (15.15 percent) ? all of which committed to reducing emissions under the Kyoto Protocol that took effect in 2005 and has since been extended through 2020.

The EU-15 countries ? the 15 countries that were members of the European Union before 2004 ? were ?committed to reducing their collective emissions to 8% below 1990 levels by the years 2008-2012,? the EU says on its ?climate action? website. The United States did not ratify the treaty.

The nation with the largest reduction as a percentage since 2006 is the Republic of Tajikistan, which reduced its emissions by 64.71 percent. Its emissions dropped from 7.418 million metric tons in 2006 to 2.618 million metric tons in 2011.

Over-Engineered Speaker Cables? Nope, Actual Speakers

Do you live in a bizarre, warped, Escher-style home that's made installing a booming sound system next to impossible? The Anakonda KAN200 might look like a well shielded audio cable, but it's actually a flexible speaker designed to squeeze into spots where traditional boxy speakers don't fit, but still require jam pumping.

This Nesting Storage Beats Any Set of Russian Dolls

Moving house has never been easier than with this amazing set of nesting storage units. Designed by Sasa Mitrovic of TwentyTree, an amazing six pieces fit together seamlessly?and look great, too.

Called Matrioshka, the wooden storage units all fit inside the large orange armoire. Pull out the cabinets as and when you need them, or use them all from the off. They have a pretty 60s vibe about them that may or may not be to your taste, but they're damn practical regardless.

While they made their debut at the Milan Design Week earlier this year, they're now to be manufactured by SCSplus and Ergomade. Sadly there's currently no word on pricing. [Twenty Tree via Design Milk]

An Artist Got 16 Bucks for a Song That Pandora Streamed a Million Times

An Artist Got 16 Bucks for a Song That Pandora Streamed a Million Times

A million of anything is pretty much always an insanely impossible number. Winning a million dollars, having a million Twitter followers, selling a million products?anything done a million times is something to be proud of. But maybe not getting your song streamed on Pandora a million times. All you get sometimes is 16 measly dollars. Or $16.89 to be exact.

David Lowery, songwriter and musician, had his song he wrote "Low" streamed 1,159,000 times on Pandora in the past quarter. That's a pretty huge number, right? Certainly more than the 116,260 times "Low" was streamed on Spotify or the 179 times Sirius XM played the song. The difference was Spotify paid $12.05 for the 100,000 times and Sirius paid more than a dollar per play ($181.94). So how the heck did Pandora get away with just paying 16 bucks for a million plays? It's the government's fault.

No, seriously. Congress sets the rates of which artist royalties are paid. Lowery explains:

For you civilians webcasting rates are ?compulsory? rates. They are set by the government (crazy, right?). Further since they are compulsory royalties, artists can not ?opt out? of a service like Pandora even if they think Pandora doesn?t pay them enough. The majority of songwriters have their rates set by the government, too, in the form of the ASCAP and BMI rate courts?a single judge gets to decide the fate of songwriters (technically not a ?compulsory? but may as well be).

Pandora is barely giving anything of worth for using the songwriters and artists' music. The $16 Lowery got represented 40% ownership of the song as a songwriter (the other portion belongs to the band). He does note that being a performer of the song gives the artist a separate royalty but that even though it's a bit higher, it's also "quite lame".

So next time you like a song, maybe support the artist by streaming somewhere else. Or buying their album. Or going to their concert. Or just giving them money when you see them on the street. [The Trichordist]

American Airlines finishes rolling out iPad flight bags

American Airlines finishes rolling out iPad flight bags

Some airlines and aircraft makers have made a big deal of moving to tablet-based flight bags, but few can say they've made a complete switch. American Airlines can -- it just finished deploying iPad-based kits to all its cockpits, which can use the tablets at every stage of flight. The move lets the carrier ditch paper charts and manuals across the board, with an according round of savings in fuel and weight. Regional partners haven't made the leap to digital, although that may come soon: American Eagle Airlines will have the choice of using iPad flight bags starting on July 10th. While most of us in the passenger seats will never notice the difference, the shift will likely help American's bottom line.

Can Online Gaming Increase Reaction Time? - American Live Wire

Can Online Gaming Increase Reaction Time?

Over the last 10 years or so, online gaming and gaming has a whole has taken a huge leap forward, with incredibly realistic games ranging from shooters, such as the popular franchise ?Call Of Duty?, to racing games, such as ?Gran Turismo?. But do these games have any real benefit to those playing them?

There has always been an idea that due to the concentration levels obtained whilst playing many of these games, the player may often enter a state of higher awareness whilst playing, zoning out from the outside world and becoming enticed in their game, which in turn increases their reaction time and level of skill. After visiting an interesting conference back in 2011 at the big gaming event Blizzcon, it led me and many others to believe this to be true.

One of the side conferences held was one regarding the difference in a hardcore and casual gamer, and how one may be effected by their gaming in the real world. They had covered many areas of tests, from social skills, IQ, and the one i was most interested in, reaction and awareness.

A group of 5 gamers considered ?Hardcore?, were brought on stage, an elite crew that had been gaming religiously for over 10 years, and another group of individuals the same age as the first group, but with less time spent on games and more time in the real world. The first test was a reaction test, where you had to click a mouse on a computer screen as soon as it changed color. The average time of the casual gamers was around the 0.33s mark, and incredibly, the hardcore gamers had an average of just 0.21 seconds, a huge increase, giving us the first idea that hardcore gaming can give people a higher sense of reaction.

The second test was a tennis ball being shot out of a device, and players from each team had to take turns to catch it. And again, the gaming team took the lead with a 4-3 victory. With many years spent playing online games from a keyboard and mouse to a controller, it is believed that these individuals hand-eye co-ordination would be higher and more trained then an average person, giving them an edge here too.

The third test was my favorite, and really did take it to the ?real world?, and let us see whether or not these higher senses of reaction and awareness could actually help in the real world.

This test consisted of a driving school game, complete with steering wheel and pedals. The game was set up for a car to drive down a street, and you had to drive in and out of obstacles, and out of nowhere a child would step out in front of your car, and the faster you hit the brake, the quicker your reaction time. After each 5 members of the teams had taken part, it was a clear victory, with the online gaming team having an overall average stopping time almost 0.2s faster than the other team, it became clear that their heightened sense of reaction and awareness due to their many years of online gaming could be applied in the real world.

So a clear sweep for the online gaming team. Does that conclude that online gaming really does improve your real world reaction and awareness? Going by these tests alone, of course, but for more accurate statistics, a much larger field of candidates would need to be tested.

Army To Cut Brigades At 10 U.S. Bases

WASHINGTON ? The Army will eliminate at least 12 combat brigades, relocate thousands of soldiers and cancel $400 million in construction projects as the first wave of federal budget cuts takes aim at military communities around the country.

In a massive restructuring, Army leaders said Tuesday that they will slash the number of active duty combat brigades from 45 to 33, as the service moves forward with a longtime plan to cut the size of the service by 80,000. And they warned that more cuts ? of as many as 100,000 more active duty, National Guard and Reserve soldiers ? could be coming if Congress allows billions of dollars in automatic budget cuts to continue next year.

The sweeping changes would eliminate brigades ? which number from 3,500 to 5,000 troops ? at 10 Army bases in the U.S. by 2017, including those in Texas, Kentucky, Georgia, Colorado, North Carolina, New York, Kansas and Washington. The Army will also cut thousands of other jobs across the service, including soldiers in units that support the brigades, and two brigades in Germany have already been scheduled for elimination.

Gen. Ray Odierno, Army chief of staff, said one additional brigade will likely be cut, but no final decisions have been made.

"I know in the local communities it will have its impact," Odierno told reporters Tuesday. "But we've done our best to reach out to them so they understand what the impacts are. We've tried to make it as small an impact as possible for as many communities as we could."

Members of Congress, meanwhile, expressed concerns about the prospects for greater cuts down the road.

Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said his panel "will carefully examine the implications of this initial restructuring, but we all must understand that this is only the tip of the iceberg, much deeper cuts are still to come."

The Army is being reduced in size from a high of about 570,000 during the peak of the Iraq war to 490,000 as part of efforts to cut the budget and reflect the country's military needs as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan end. Odierno said that the potential 100,000 more would be spread out across the active duty, Guard and Reserves, and that there also could be reductions in the Army's 13 aviation brigades.

While the personnel cuts may have less impact at some of the Army's larger bases such as Fort Hood in Texas and Fort Bragg in North Carolina, they could be more painful for communities around some of the smaller installations such as Fort Knox, where currently only one brigade is based.

The other seven U.S. bases that will lose a brigade are: Fort Bliss in Texas, Fort Campbell in Kentucky, Fort Carson in Colorado, Fort Drum in New York, Fort Riley in Kansas, Fort Stewart in Georgia, and Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. Soldiers in the deactivated brigades would be transferred to other units.

Odierno said the Army tried to spread out the cuts geographically. He said Fort Knox scored the lowest in military value, but insisted the reduction was not the first step toward closing the base. He noted that about 4,000 civilians workers had been added there, as well as the Army's recruiting command.

The overall cut in size has been known for more than a year, and Army leaders have been working on how to manage the reduction, conducting local community meetings across the country and releasing an extensive study on the issue earlier this year.

Under the plan announced Tuesday, the Army will increase the size of its infantry and armor brigades by adding another battalion, which is between 600-800 soldiers. Adding the battalion was a recommendation from commanders in Iraq and Afghanistan who said it would beef up the fighting capabilities of the brigades when they go to war.

Odierno said he continues to hope that he will be able to cut the 80,000 soldiers largely through voluntary departures. He said he believes he will have to force several hundred officers to leave in order to get the proper number of soldiers at various ranks. But, if the automatic cuts go forward, Odierno said he would likely have to force soldiers out of the Army.

These initial brigade cuts do not affect National Guard or Reserve units.

Officials said the decisions on the cuts were based on a variety of factors including required training resources, ranges, air space and infrastructure, as well as the need to put units near leadership and headquarters units.

Bomb attacks in Syrian capital kill 8 people

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Suicide bombers targeted security compounds in Damascus and a car bomb exploded in a pro-regime district there Sunday, killing at least eight people, the latest in a surge of civil war violence in the capital.

In northern Syria, a car bomb killed 12 soldiers in Aleppo, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists in Syria for information. It had no other details, and the government did not comment.

In neighboring Lebanon, meanwhile, fierce clashes erupted between the Lebanese military and supporters of a hard-line Sunni Muslim cleric, in the latest spillover from Syria. Six Lebanese soldiers were killed, according to the army, which vowed to hit back with an "iron hand."

Heavy fighting with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades in Sidon caused panic in the southern coastal city, which until recently had been largely spared the violence hitting other areas. Many people who were spending the day on the beach hurried home, while others living on high floors came down or fled to safer areas. Gray smoke billowed over parts of the city and residents caught in the fire appealed for help.

The fighting broke out in the predominantly Sunni city after supporters of Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir, a virulent critic of the powerful Shiite militant Hezbollah group, opened fire on an army checkpoint.

The military issued a statement confirming that six soldiers died in the shooting, including three officers. It said the shooting was unprovoked.

Syria's state-run news agency SANA said three suicide bombers blew themselves up while trying to break into the Rukneddine police station in northern Damascus, killing five people and wounding several others. SANA said three would-be suicide bombers also tried to break into the Criminal Security Branch in the southern Bab Mousalla area but were caught by security forces before they could detonate their explosives.

Activists confirmed the death toll.

SANA said a car bomb exploded in Mazzeh 86 district in the capital, killing three people, including a 3-year-old boy. Residents of the district are mostly Alawites, an offshoot Shiite sect that President Bashar Assad's family belongs to. The opposition forces fighting against Assad's regime are mostly Sunni Muslims.

Nobody immediately claimed responsibility for the Damascus explosions, but they bore the hallmarks of al-Qaida-linked groups that have joined forces with rebels fighting to oust Assad.

The attacks in Syria's two largest cities came as government forces pressed an offensive on the outskirts of the capital.

SANA carried a statement by the Interior Ministry saying that the Damascus attacks were a "new escalation by terrorist groups," a term used by the government to refer to the rebels.

More than 93,000 people have been killed in Syrian conflict that started in March 2011 as peaceful protest against Assad's rule. In the past year, the war has taken on sectarian overtones.

The conflict has increasingly spilled across Syria's borders.

The clashes in Sidon centered on the Bilal bin Rabbah Mosque, where al-Assir preaches. The cleric is believed to have hundreds of armed supporters in Sidon who fought back Sunday. Dozens of al-Assir's gunmen also partially shut down the main highway linking south Lebanon with Beirut.

By Sunday evening, the army had besieged the mosque, sealing off access to it from all directions, and was going after al-Assir and his supporters, who have been agitating for months.

The NNA report said Assir was believed to be hiding inside the mosque with several of his followers.

The cleric and his followers support Sunni rebels in the Syria conflict, and he has threatened to clear apartments in Sidon where Hezbollah supporters live.

Sunday's clashes in Sidon deepened tensions in Lebanon. on edge since the Syrian conflict began more than two years ago.

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman called an emergency meeting of the security cabinet for Monday. NNA also reported sporadic shooting in the volatile city of Tripoli in the north, and the army announced additional force deployments in around Beirut.

The violence came a day after an 11-nation group that includes the U.S. met in the Qatari capital of Doha to coordinate military aid and other forms of assistance to the rebels.

Syria's al-Thawra newspaper, the mouthpiece of the government, assailed the Friends of Syria meeting.

"It's clear that the enemies of Syria are rushing to arm the terrorists to kill the chances for holding the Geneva conference," the newspaper said, referring to a U.S.-Russia initiative for bringing Assad's government and rebels together to negotiate an end to the crisis.

The Syrian paper pledged that the army would "continue the showdown to eliminate terrorism and restore security and stability."

South Africa: Nelson Mandela in critical condition

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Nelson Mandela's health has deteriorated and he is now in critical condition, the South African government said Sunday.

The office of President Jacob Zuma said in a statement that he had visited the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader at a hospital Sunday evening and was informed by the medical team that Mandela's condition had become critical in the past 24 hours.

"The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well-looked after and is comfortable. He is in good hands," Zuma said in the statement, using Mandela's clan name.

Zuma also met Graca Machel, Mandela's wife, at the hospital in Pretoria and discussed the former leader's condition, according to the statement. Zuma was accompanied on the visit by Cyril Ramaphosa, the deputy president of the country's ruling party, the African National Congress.

Mandela, who became South Africa's first black president after the end of apartheid in 1994, was hospitalized on June 8 for what the government said was a recurring lung infection.

In the statement, Zuma also discussed the government's acknowledgement a day earlier that an ambulance carrying Mandela to the hospital two weeks ago had engine trouble, requiring the former president to be transferred to another ambulance for his journey to the hospital.

"There were seven doctors in the convoy who were in full control of the situation throughout the period. He had expert medical care," Zuma said. "The fully equipped military ICU ambulance had a full complement of specialist medical staff including intensive care specialists and ICU nurses. The doctors also dismissed the media reports that Madiba suffered cardiac arrest. There is no truth at all in that report."

Zuma appealed to South Africans and the rest of the world to pray for Mandela, his family and the medical team that is attending to him.

On April 29, state television broadcast footage of a visit by Zuma and other leaders of the African National Congress to Mandela's home. Zuma said at the time that Mandela was in good shape, but the footage ? the first public images of Mandela in nearly a year ? showed him silent and unresponsive, even when Zuma tried to hold his hand.

Mandela was jailed for 27 years under white racist rule and was released in 1990. He then played a leading role in steering the divided country from the apartheid era to democracy, becoming South Africa's first black president in all-race elections in 1994.

As a result of his sacrifice and peacemaking efforts, he is seen by many around the world as a symbol of reconciliation.

Driver dies in 24 Hours of Le Mans race

Danish driver Allan Simonsen died following a crash at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on Saturday in the first driver fatality at the high-speed endurance event since 1997.

Race organizers said the 34-year-old Simonsen was taken to the hospital after his Aston Martin No. 95 crashed about 10 minutes after the start of the race. The car spun at high speed and skidded into the barrier at the Tertre Rouge corner where speeds reach up to 170 kph (105 mph).

The violence of the impact showed as a tire from Simonsen's car rolled on the track while a door hung open.

Simonsen died at the hospital soon after arrival "due to his injuries," organizers said.

"Tragically, and despite the best efforts of the emergency services in attendance, Allan's injuries proved fatal," Aston Martin Racing said in a statement on its website.

Sebastien Enjolras lost his life in pre-qualifying in 1997. The last driver fatality in the 24-hour race itself was Jo Gartner in 1986.

The worst crash in Le Mans history occurred in 1955 when Pierre Levegh's Mercedes flew into the crowd, killing more than 80 spectators.

Aston Martin, which has five Vantage V8 cars in the GTE-Pro and GTE-Am classes, will continue in the race "at the specific request" of Simonsen's family and in tribute to the driver.

"I would like to extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the individuals, and families whose friends or loved ones were involved in today's terrible tragedy," Aston Martin Racing managing director John Gaw said.

The safety car came out after the crash and the race was held up for nearly an hour to repair the guard rail.

Simonsen was participating for the seventh time at the endurance race, which is won by the team that completes the most laps in 24 hours with up to three drivers alternating. He finished second in the GT2 class at Le Mans three years ago. He clocked the fastest time in qualifying on Thursday in the GTE-Am class.

Simonsen and Danish co-drivers Kristian Poulsen and Christoffer Nygaard were leading the GTE-Am class in the world endurance championship after topping their category at Silverstone in April and finishing second in Spa-Francorchamps last month.

Audi held the top three spots after the sixth hour, followed by two Toyotas.

IndyCar series leader Helio Castroneves tweeted: "Very sad to know about the fatal accident of Allan Simonsen on Le Mans today. Praying for him and (his) family."

Tony Kanaan, another IndayCar driver, tweeted: "Such a tragic news on the passing of @AllanSimonsen. Sad day in motorsports again. Thoughts and prayers are with his family."

There was second driver death on Saturday, in Germany. Two-time champion Wolf Silvester died because of "health problems" during the German VLN Endurance Racing Championship, race organizers said.

Safety marshalls said Silvester, 55, apparently lost control of his Opel Astra OPC, and when they approached the stopped car on the track they found him sitting motionless in the seat. The dpa news agency reported that Silvester had a heart attack.

Shawn Amos: WATCH: Content Shines At Cannes

The big winner at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity? Content.

Agencies, executives and thought leaders from around the world gathered in the French Riviera this week to celebrate the best in advertising and communication, and to honor campaigns that span television, print, radio, social media, mobile and more.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, the Festival received 35,765 entries from 92 countries. The big winners were campaigns that set aside the hard-sell and focused on bringing thought-provoking and entertaining content to their audiences.

"Dumb Ways To Die," a campaign for Metro Trains in Melbourne, Australia, aimed at promoting rail safety, was the festival's big winner, with 5 total Grand Prix awards - a new record.

Its clever and insanely catchy song topped iTunes charts in several countries, while the accompanying video, depicting cartoon characters dying in, well, dumb ways, has already been seen by more than 50 million people (fair warning: you will not be able to get the tune out of your head). It also featured a mobile game, a book, interactive posters and radio advertising.

The result? Just three months after the launch, Metro saw a 21% reduction in accidents and deaths compared to a year ago, and a million people signed pledges on the website to be safe around trains.

Remember that Dove "Real Beauty" viral video from a few months ago? It was Cannes' Titanium Grand Prix winner. The video featured a sketch artist who drew various women based on their own descriptions, and then based on others' descriptions; the vastly different results hit home with women worldwide.

Another big winner was Toshiba/Intel's "The Beauty Inside," which took home the Grand Prix in the Branded Content and Entertainment category. The six-episode social film featured a main character who woke up as a different person every morning. Topher Grace played the lead, Alex, but the campaign encouraged fans to submit their own video diaries to play the character. It also won an Emmy recently at the Daytime Emmy Awards.

"Branded Content and Entertainment" is a new category, added just last year, and it highlights the importance that content, in all forms, plays in the modern advertising and marketing world. Last year's inaugural winner was Chipotle's emotional "Back to the Start" commercial, which gained national prominence during the 2012 Grammy Awards.

Find out more about the festival in the latest episode of "The Content Brief" from Freshwire below.

Catch up on the video game console wars with last week's episode right here.

Google ordered to delete 'Street View' data in Britain

British data watchdog group orders Google to delete personal data on the company's Street View project.?

Britain's data regulator Friday ordered Internet giant?Google?to delete personal data scooped up in its?Street?View?project ? or face a contempt of court action.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The Information Commissioner's Office served?Google?Inc. with an enforcement notice, giving it 35 days to kill material captured in the project that featured camera-toting vehicles shooting images of the world's?streets.

To make sense of the pictures,?Google?had to be able to place precisely where the properties being photographed were located. Using a computer program, the vehicles taking the images used local Wi-Fi outlets to place the properties, and in doing so, collected snippets of data from the Wi-Fi networks.

The disclosure angered Internet users when it was first revealed in 2010, and Britain was one of several countries that launched inquiries. But it accepted?Google's?explanation that it had destroyed the material.

But last year,?Google?acknowledged that a handful of the discs had been discovered and the regulator promptly re-opened the investigation. US authorities raised concerns about the engineer who created the software.

However, investigators in Britain concluded there wasn't enough evidence on a corporate level to prove thatGoogle?had intended to collect personal data, and stopped short of imposing a penalty. In the United States, it paid a $7 million fine to settle a multistate investigation.

"The early days of?Google?Street?View?should be seen as an example of what can go wrong if technology companies fail to understand how their products are using personal information," Stephen Eckersley, the office's head of enforcement said in a statement.

The data regulator said the breach would have been worse had the data been disseminated.?Google?has insisted it was never examined.

Google?promised to comply with the order.

"We work hard to get privacy right at?Google," the company said in a statement. "But in this case we didn't, which is why we quickly tightened up our systems to address the issue. The project leaders never wanted this data, and didn't use it or even look at it."

The enforcement notice adds to the growing unease in Europe about whether?Google?was taking privacy concerns too lightly. France on Thursday gave the Internet search engine three months to be more upfront about the data it collects from users ? or be fined. Other European data watchdogs are also concerned.

Driver dies during race at Germany's Nuerburgring

NUERBURG, Germany (AP) ? Race organizers say two-time champion Wolf Silvester has died because of "health problems" during the German VLN Endurance Racing Championship.

Safety marshalls at Saturday's race said Silvester apparently lost control of his Opel Astra OPC, and when they approached the stopped car on the track they found him sitting motionless in the seat.

Attempts were made to resuscitate the 55-year-old driver on the way to the circuit's medical center "where the chief medical officer finally had to testify the death due to an internal medical background."

The dpa news agency reports the driver suffered a heart attack.

Silvester won the 10-race endurance series title in 2006 and 2010.

VLN Chairman Rolf Krimpmann said, "We are deeply concerned and our thoughts are with his family."

The third-round race of the series was canceled.

Black holes may have thrived in early universe

April Hobart, NASA, Chandra X-Ray Observatory

An artist's illustration of the view into a black hole. Black holes may have been abundant among the universe's first stars..

ByCharles Q. Choi
Space.com

Black holes may have been abundant among the first stars in the universe, helping explain the origin of the supermassive monsters that lurk at the heart of galaxies today, researchers say.

An international team of astronomers has found that black holes likely contributed at least 20 percent of the infrared cosmic background, light emitted 400 million to 800 million years after the Big Bang that created our universe 13.8 billion years ago.

These early pioneers may have been the seeds that later grew into supermassive black holes, which contain millions to billions of times the mass of our sun, researchers said. [Gallery: Black Holes of the Universe]

"It's a relief to find a possible signature of these seeds," study co-author Guenther Hasinger, director of the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, told Space.com.

The earliest black holes
Black holes possess gravitational fields so powerful that not even light can escape. They are generally believed to form after a star dies in a gigantic explosion known as a supernova, which crushes the remaining core into a tiny but incredibly dense volume.

It's unclear how black holes grow to supermassive proportions, but they can apparently do so quite rapidly. For example, some of them were apparently already well-established by 800 million years or so after the Big Bang.

To learn more about the earliest stars and the first black holes, the study team analyzed X-ray and infrared signals using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and Spitzer Space Telescope, respectively.

NASA WMAP Science Team; K. Teramura, UHifA; NASA / JPL-Caltech, A. Kashlinsky (GSFC); NASA / ESA, S. Beckwith (STScl), Hudf Team

This is a diagram of what the early universe is believed to have looked like..

The X-rays that Chandra saw likely came from matter that became superheated as it rushed into black holes, researchers said. The infrared rays Spitzer detected, on the other hand, make up the cosmic infrared background, the collective light from clusters of massive stars in the universe's first stellar generations after the Big Bang, as well as from black holes, which generate vast amounts of energy as they devour gas.

The investigators focused on a region known as the Extended Groth Strip, a well-analyzed slice of sky slightly larger than the full moon in the constellation Bootes. They concentrated on spots that shone powerfully in both infrared and X-ray light. Black holes are the only plausible sources that can produce both forms of light at the intensities they looked at, scientists said.

"This measurement took us some five years to complete and the results came as a great surprise to us," lead author Nico Cappelluti, an astronomer with the National Institute of Astrophysics in Bologna, Italy, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, said in a statement.

"Our results indicate black holes are responsible for at least 20 percent of the cosmic infrared background, which indicates intense activity from black holes feeding on gas during the epoch of the first stars," co- author Alexander Kashlinsky, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said in a statement.

How monsters grow
These early objects could help explain the origins of supermassive black holes, researchers said, and also shed light on another puzzle from the universe's youth ? a stage known as reionization.

During this era between about 150 million to 800 million years after the Big Bang, radiation ionized the neutrally charged hydrogen pervading the universe to its constituent protons and electrons.

"It is currently thought generally, although not unanimously, that stars were responsible for reionization," Kashlinsky told Space.com. "Our result indicates that black holes were a significant, potentially dominant, contributor to that process."

It remains uncertain how massive these early black holes were. They could be mini-quasars containing a few tens of thousands of solar masses, born from the collapse of giant clouds of gas and dust. Or they could be micro-quasars a few hundred solar masses large spawned from massive dying stars.

Mini-quasars would be heavily obscured by clouds and thus likely would not factor into reionization very much, while micro-quasars could easily pump out enough radiation to make a key contribution, Hasinger said.

The Euclid mission from the European Space Agency and the eROSITA mission from Russia and Germany might be able to shed more light on these early black holes. In addition, NASA's upcoming James Webb Space Telescope might be able to see these objects individually, confirming whether they are mini-quasars or micro-quasars, Hasinger said.
