Taking care of business - Texas Beach Safety

Last week?s storm took out 13 signs along the beach front.? After the storm blasted through, I made an early morning beach run to make sure everything was in place. I noticed the signs were down and made a mental note to get a crew moving on that when I got to headquarters.

To my happy surprise, I noticed a Park Board maintenance vehicle had already loaded a few of the signs and broken poles up in the back of a pickup truck. To my even happier surprise, I found a crew of our full time guards in the final stages of loading up a trailer with new signs, posts, and a water pump to handle it.

There are many things that bring me joy at the workplace. Working in my favorite environment and having the privilege to play a part in keeping people alive and happy are two of the highest on the list. But right up there is when things run well. Because things don?t just ?run well? on their own. The system has to be well designed, resources have to be available, and, most importantly, staff has to be motivated and empowered to think and act independently.? Motivation is a subtle thing. It comes when people feel supported and validated. It certainly doesn?t occur when bosses try to catch employees messing up or to intimidate them with threats.

I have been extremely lucky in this area because I have an extremely good staff who all believe in the ?cause? of keeping the beaches safe. They?re all easily motivated, positive people and see the value in the work we do. I find myself in a position of taking credit for all the good things they do more often than not. It?s rare that they need a ?course correction? and even more rare that Captain Tony Pryor or another supervisor hasn?t? already handled that by the time I notice anything.

Our full time employees are the best of the best. To keep them that way and to provide them with the tools they need they?ve been using some of the winter time to do a lot of professional development. Over the past two weeks alone they?ve been involved in a patrol procedures course, requalification shoot, felony takedown class, and a self defense course. These have been taught by the Galveston Police Department and/or the Galveston Sheriff Office. Coming up they have an eco-art workshop taught by the Artist Boat and a marine safety officer course offered by the Sheriff Office. Groups like the Sheriff Office, Galveston Police Department, the Park Board, and the Artist Boat understand the value of community and working together. There are many others that make it a pleasure to work with and that bring us to a whole new level.

When we take a minute to look at all the components that weave together to create the fabric of our personal and professional lives, it really makes you realize how lucky we are to live here.
